About Frank Haugland

Professional Statement

I have been caring for patients since I completed my training at the Mayo Clinic in 1996. I do ablations, pacemakers, defibrillators, loop recorders and heart monitors. I have kept in touch with the latest technology, which we have at Waterloo. More importantly, I treat my patients, my assistants and my partners with kindness and respect. Spending a little extra time listening helps my patients a lot.

Why did you become a provider?
My father was a small-town doctor.

Why did you decide to join UnityPoint Health?
I wanted to return to Iowa to be closer to my wife and youngest son, and I came where the need was the greatest.

Describe your average patient:
I see patients ranging from 18 to 100 – those with arrhythmias and patients who need devices.

What would your patients say about you?
I spend a little extra time listening and explaining, and I'm always kind.

Most important thing to know:
We have a very good group here at Allen Hospital.

Ideal provider/patient relationship:
When patients believe that I've helped them with good explanations and make them feel that they are important.

What's most important for patients to know about your medical philosophy?
I want our environment to be kind, happy and relaxed.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I played lead guitar in a rock band in high school in college. I still play for fun. To keep my mind sharp, I play chess on chess.com, and my score is at the 99.3%. My wife is a better musician and singer than I am, but I like playing with her and our youngest son.
